Cairo2Cape 2012 – No Place too Far

A dream is becoming reality for seven boys and one girl with a sense of adventure from the Cape Town area, Western Cape, South Africa (six on motorbikes and two in air-conditioned comfort) travelling down the length of Africa. The proposed route is expected to take them across 15,000 km of the best and worst roads Africa has to offer and will take two months to complete. They are not only undertaking this epic journey to experience Africa, but also to make a difference in the lives of children in need through their involvement with the Durbanville Children’s Home and more specifically their CHILLI (Care House for Individual Life Lesson Interventions) unit.

One of the team members, Rob Reinecke, described their involvement with the home as follows: "Cairo2Cape 2012 "No Place Too Far" is proud to support the wonderful staff and children at the Durbanville Children’s Home and more specifically their C.H.I.L.L.I. unit. It is very important to note that 100% of contributions made or pledged to our C2C4C initiative are received by the Durbanville Children’s Home. In no way will we benefit financially from this endeavour. Our reward is the small contribution our actions make towards raising awareness and funds for this very deserving cause.

Their objective is to raise sufficient funds which would fund this Unit for one financial year, which equates to in excess of R 500 000 p.a."

More about the unit: The unit was created to address the urgent need at the Children’s Home for a safe and specially secured place where children who are either dependent on substances, presenting with deviant behaviour or maladjusted to life at the home, can be housed for therapeutic intervention. Previously the only course of action available was referral to youth care institutions with tighter security. Having this unit at the Children’s Home ensures a more homely set-up where children with problematic behaviour and/or substance dependency can be helped. Presently 14 children are housed in this unit for therapeutic interventions. It costs us R 5 000 per month per child to give these children the support they so desperately needs.
