What is known today as Durbanville Children’s Home, originally started as Kinderzendinghuis in Cape Town 127 years ago in 1883. The home cared for children orphaned by, among others, smallpox, flu, and plagues. Some 36 years later, another branch of the home was built on a piece of land purchased in the Durbanville area, 25 km from Cape Town. Today the home is run only from the Durbanville branch along with two satellite houses in nearby Kraaifontein. Durbanville Children’s Home continues, after more than a century, to care for children from multi-racial backgrounds and with special needs, ensuring their nutrition, shelter and safety. To this end, 21 children have the opportunity to live in their area of origin, close to family, friends and school, while under Durbanville Children’s Home’s care at the two Kraaifontein satellite houses. The first house opened its doors at 14 Joubert Street in 2008, and the second was opened in partnership with the management of Shiloh Synergy in 2009 at 90 8th Avenue. Both these satellite houses are proving very successful as children can live in smaller units in their own communities and Durbanville Children’s Home hopes to expand this model in the near future. |
